TRX

What is TRX?

TRX stands for “Total Body Resistance Exercise”

TRX is a suspension training system originally designed by a Navy Seal as a way for them to train and keep in shape when in circumstances where they found very little training space. They needed a way to keep in top shape no matter where they were in the world. It was initially fashioned from parachute straps that were hand stitched together with rubber boat repair tools. The straps could be suspended from anywhere…. military tanks, ships, submarines, etc. and use the persons own body weight as resistance. As the Seals developed an array of exercises to challenge themselves and stay in shape, they realized this was an entirely new method of exercise: Suspension Training.

The current version of TRX is two strong nylon straps with a handle at the end of each strap. The set of straps is anchored to a fixed point and from that point you determine the angle of your body (and the degree of challenge) in each exercise. As you hold the handles, you position where you place your feet or hands, suspending your body by adjusting the angle. In this way, you use your own bodyweight and gravity as resistance to build up strength. How you position your body while holding on to the handles affects the muscle groups you target, as well as the intensity of the workout.

Is TRX training right for you?

TRX Works For Everyone
One of the biggest benefits of TRX is that it’s so versatile and our TRX classes are taught in an all levels group class setting. This appeals to many different students of all levels of ability, all of whom may have different goals. (It also makes it fun to work out with the camaraderie and encouragement of the group!)

TRX, whose motto is “all core all the time” is the perfect fit for yoga or Pilates students who already understand how to keep their core engaged and hold a good neutral alignment (posture) in their spine. Our students tend to enjoy TRX because of these similarities and their familiarity with the body movements they already know from yoga and Pilates. This gives them the confidence to jump in to any TRX class and find their level of challenge.

At the same time, TRX also appeals to athletes who want to add a strength-training component to their fitness routines. Everyone who tries it agrees it’s just a lot of fun hanging around on suspension cables as a way to get a workout! No matter your fitness level, our TRX classes can work for everyone: it allows seniors to move freely without fear of falling, it challenges athletes, new moms see spectacular results, along with bodybuilders, and men and women of all ages and abilities.

You Control the Intensity

TRX is for everyone! – Anyone can try TRX regardless of fitness levels. The level of challenge is determined by the angle of your body in relation to the straps anchor, and it very easy to find and make adjustments to so that each exercise suits your own level of difficulty.
As you build up as your muscular endurance, you can increase the angle and alignment of your body to increase the challenge to your muscles. . Brand new students can work out in the same class with experienced TRX students, and still get the workout that is right for them with a few simple adjustments.

A Full Body Workout

TRX offers multiple levels of challenge for all muscle groups. (It even can be a cardio workout when done at a faster pace) TRX only uses two suspension straps, but there are infinite ways to use them. We do all parts of the body in each class: Legs, arms, core, back, planks, upper-body resistance exercise — you can do it all with TRX!

Cardiovascular Benefits

While TRX works out your muscles, it also works out different parts of your body while at the same time getting your heart pumping! Most of the exercises on the suspension cables involve so many muscles that your body’s requirement for oxygen is increased tremendously. This gets your heart and lungs pumping to deliver this oxygen to the muscles, making it a win-win for those who want to get a good cardio workout in while getting the benefits of strength training. More bang for your buck! What a bargain!

More Efficient Workouts

TRX offers a unique combination of resistance training. You are challenging muscular balance, mobility, core strength, and at the same time cardio. What this means is you’re getting more done in less time! Getting an incredibly effective, full-body workout in less time.

Who doesn’t want that?

The best part

The best part is taking a class with us allows you to learn the “ropes” of TRX under the guidance of a professional certified teacher who is also trained in Pilates. (This means your teacher can help you with form and alignment corrections so that you get the absolute most from every workout!) TRX is another way to enhance and challenge our body using the Pilates principals.

Learning the proper techniques for the routines and familiarizing yourself with safety precautions in a safe classroom setting will set you up for success and help you meet your fitness goals with variety.
